Resurrection are fired up for ‘special’ festival gig

- Music Preview

The frontman of a popular Stone Roses tribute band says he is looking forward to playing at the “special” soundwave festival in Coatbridge next month.

Ricky Toner has performed with his band, Resurrection, in front of thousands of fans at venues in Glasgow and Manchester over the years. They even sold out Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom as the headliners of a tribute evening. But despite the big stages, Ricky says “ye cannae beat” playing in the intimate setting of the Eagle Inn’s annual music extravaganza.

He said: “We’ve played at this event before and it’s always a great craic with an amazing atmosphere.

“The Eagle always brings in good bands and it’s definitely one of the best nights of the year.

“You’re so close to the audience on a smaller stage, with nothing separating you.

“I thank my lucky stars we’re able to play at venues like the Barrowlands but smaller shows are just magic.

“There’s a different vibe — and ye cannae beat it.

“That’s what playing live music is all about.”

Ricky continued: “We’ve been performing at Soundwave every year since we reformed in 2014 and we’ve got to know so many people from it.

“I can’t wait to see them again and playing in the wee room with them all is a very spiritual experience.”

The Soundwave festival is just weeks away and bands such as Feet of Clay, The Sneaky Russians and The Cantormentors will also be taking to the stage on August 4.

Tickets are still on sale for the allday event, and Ricky revealed those who come along can expect to see something new from Resurrection.

He explained: “We always change the setlist and put different songs in.

“At every gig, we play songs we’ve either never played before or not played in a long time.

“We bring out the classics but bring a few new ones in that are cult favourites for more diehard fans.

“We always mix it up and include B-sides that people won’t expect, too.”

After the show, Resurrection will then prepare for a headline gig at the Barrowlands.

Ricky said: “We’re playing at a tribute night with Noel Gallagher, Primal Scream and Happy Mondays tributes.

“They’re all great and it’ll be a another big show.”
