Robbo selection problem welcome

-

Manager Stephen Robinson is looking forward to a selection headache when the competitive fixtures roll around next week.

Motherwell kick off their season against Edinburgh City in the Befred Cup.

And Robbo is pleased that he now has more strength in depth as the club look to replicate and expand on their terrific last season.

“What we identified last year, from 13 to 18 wasn’t quite good enough to take us into the top six,”Robbo said.

“We feel now we’ve bought players that can do that.

“We feel the strength we now have gives us options. It gives me a difficult choice at times.”

The Steelmen have added goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, defenders Liam Donnelly and Aaron TaylorSinclair, midfielder Alex Gorrin and striker Danny Johnson over the course and summer.

And while Robbo welcomes the selection headache, he is still looking to bring one more forward in before the start of the season.

He said:“We’ve got a lot of midfielders and a lot of choices that will be difficult to make but if you’re going to be in a successful set up you have to accept that and you have to deal with that. Obviously that makes us stronger as a club.

“I’d like to get one more striker in as well, to be honest, that can possibly play wide as well.

“Strikers win you football matches. We put a lot of balls into the box so I’ve got my eye on a couple of people.

“Hopefully we’ll have some business done by the end of the week.”

Robbo is also delighted to have kept the nucleus of his squad together, and is hoping he can continue to do so but won’t stand in anyone’s way should the right offer come in.

He added:“There’s a lot of interest in quite a few of our players. We’ve had one firm bid that was nowhere near enough for one particular player.

“We’ll stand our ground on that. We know what we value players at.

“There’s a fine line between standing in someone’s way to go on and earn life-changing money and getting fair value. We’ve put the players on a platform.

“We’ll see what happens. There’s been a lot of newspaper speculation which we don’t pay a lot of attention to.”
