Eyes on a fundraiser

Weekly meetings are held on Wednesdays at 7.30pm in the Old Gospel Hall in Bonkle Road. Dementia event The NCT Centre is aiming to make Newmains more dementia friendly. An open day will be held this Friday, July 20.

Bonkle Church has been fortunate to receive a grant from the Blacklaw Windfarm community benefit fund for the refurbishm­ent of the church. Work has now started on the exterior stonework, and the interior painting will be carried out during the month of August when joint services are to be held in Coltness Memorial Church. It is hoped that all the work will be completed in time for the bicentenar­y celebratio­ns. This was replaced by the present church on the same site in 1878. Staff at a Wishaw optician have pledged their support to the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation as part of a Scotland-wide fundraisin­g initiative.

The Specsavers store is donating £1 per sight test until Sunday as part of a charity fundraisin­g week in honour of Specsavers director, Tom Simpson, who died in March 2018 after battling lung cancer.

In a fitting tribute to their late colleague who worked with the high street opticians for more than 19 years, stores across the country have signed up to the fundraisin­g event which will also see donations from specs repairs, bake sales and sponsored activities all going to the worthy charity.

To celebrate Tom’s life and carry on his legacy as a spokespers­on for the Foundation, Specsavers staff have pledged to continue his good work Gowkthrapp­le community cafe is open for business on Thursdays, between 11.30am and 1.30pm in Gowkthrapp­le Community Centre. It serves tasty and affordable snack lunches and a place to enjoy a chat. while boosting funds for the UK’s only charity wholly dedicated to beating lung cancer.

Jill McArthur, chairperso­n for Specsavers in Scotland, said: “Supporting Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is Specsavers’ way of acknowledg­ing the support the charity has shown our colleague, Tom.

“Tom was truly inspiring in everything that he did. He took his story and message all the way to the European Parliament, working with Lung Cancer Europe (LUCE), in a bid to ensure more people survive the disease which is why we feel Tom’s Week is a fitting tribute.

“We want to continue the incredible work Tom began by using our platform as a company to raise awareness and funds for a lung cancer charity which was very close to Tom’s heart.”
