We lost out to ‘Class of 92’

-

Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson admitted his side had been blown away by Salford City when going for the same player.

The National League side, have five ‘Class of 92’former Manchester United players as co-owners in Gary Neville, his brother Phil, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, plus businessman Peter Lim.

The Ammies, who have been promoted three times since the group took control of the club in 2014, hit the headlines this week by signing striker Adam Rooney from Aberdeen with reports claiming the Irishman has doubled his wages by moving to the fifth tier of English football.

Motherwell boss Robinson said:“i actually competed with Salford for two players.

“I got one of them, Liam Donnelly, and completely lost out on the other one, who they blew us away with money.

“That’s a club that’s going places but that’s what you are competing with.

“Obviously they have a lot of backing and a good manager, so they are an attractive prospect for players now.”

Motherwell continued their Betfred Cup campaign ontuesday night after this newspaper went to press against Queen of the South at Fir Park.

The final match of the group takes place this Saturday and will see the Steelmen make the short trip across North Lanarkshire to Cumbernauld to take on Clyde.
