Wishaw residents believe it is vital the Post Office remains at the heart of Wishaw town centre.

The Wishaw Press was contacted last week by dozens of worried residents who travelled to the Post Office located inside Homestyle on Main Street, only to find it was shut.

And Motherwell and Wishaw MP Marion Fellows said she had also been contacted by people worried by the unexpected closure on Monday, July 23.

A Post Office spokesperson confirmed the branch closed temporarily due to “operational reasons” but our readers believe the service has to be restored as soon as possible.

Danny King said: “It’s shocking. We need to find out what is happening. We are going to end up with nothing left in Wishaw. “We need something to be done about this. “I would like to see it remaining open and we have to find out when. We need one in Wishaw.”

Joyce and Andy Wands were also critical of the Post Office’s decision.

“I’m certainly not happy about it,” said Andy.

“The town centre needs as many services as possible including the Post Office.”

Joyce added: “I think it’s shocking because elderly people in particular are being left without a proper service. They need that Post Office open to get things like their pension.

“This means they will have to travel up to Netherton or Motherwell when they shouldn’t have to. “It needs to be re-opened now.” Last week, Central Wishaw councillors Angela Feeney and Fiona Fotheringham voiced their anger at the sudden closure with both admitting it raises huge concerns.

That view was shared by Wishaw couple Iris and Johnny Jones.

“We used to have two Post Office branches in the town and now we might be looking at having none,” said Johnny.

Iris described the sudden decision to close the branch as “a disgrace”.

She added: “It’s making it much more difficult for people.

“If people want to use the service they are going to have to go to Craigneuk or Motherwell. “I don’t understand it.” Readers also blasted the Post Office’s decision on social media.

Writing on our Facebook page, Lorna O’neill said: “This is ridiculous.

“I use the Post Office on a regular basis and it’s unacceptable to expect us to go to Craigneuk.

“I don’t drive so it’s now a bus journey away.”
