Yates boss at Blackhawks

New coach replaces mentor

- Ben Ramage

Af ter narrowly missing out on the play- offs last season, the Clyde Valley Blackhawks have announced the appointment of their new Head Coach.

David Yates will be taking the reins on October 1, following the news former gaffer Richard Orr was stepping down.

Yates started his American football career at the age of 16 with Clyde Valley Hawks, under Orr.

He played there for two years before stepping up to senior level with Clyde Valley Blackhawks.

Yates said: “I’m very honoured to be adding my name to a very distinguished list of men who have been head coach of the Blackhawks.

“The likes of Davie Z, Gareth Cowie, Gordon Lockhart and, of course, my predecessor Richard Orr.

“I’m really exited and looking forward to the challenges ahead.” Yates’ first coaching role was with UWS Pyros.

From there he went on to coach offensive line and defensive line before achieving the role of defensive coordinator.

One of the challenges Yates feels he faces is bringing back players who have hung up their boots.

He hopes adding these faces can help spur the side onto bigger and better things next season and added: “I can only see positive things on the horizon for the Blackhawks.

“We have a young squad full of talent and energy, and with the right guidance we look to be a very competitive and fun team to play with next year.

“A quick message to all of the old Blackhawks watching from afar – it’s time to come home and help us grow.”
