Student Ross to take on the best in Europe
A talented Wishaw student is heading to Europe’s largest skills contest.
Ross Megahy joined the UK’S best young apprentices and students at a parliamentary reception at the House of Commons and was urged to “Do Your Country Proud” before the elite European competition.
A former New College Lanarkshire student, Ross joins 21 of the country’s elite apprentices and students to form Team UK to compete in the Euroskills finals in Budapest from September 26 to 29 to face the best of the best from across the continent.
Since winning a gold medal with New College Lanarkshire at Worldskills UK in 2016, Ross has spent two years intensively training on his subject – Mechanical Engineering Design: CAD – winning regional and national competitions as well as vigorous team selection processes to reach international standard. He said: “Since winning gold at Worldskills UK, it’s been non-stop training and I am so delighted that it has paid off.
“I t ’s an amazing achievement to represent the UK, but the nerves have started to kick in as the task in hand is becoming more of a reality.
“I’m really looking forward to the whole experience and I’ll be working as hard as possible to bring a medal home.”
Anne Milton MP, Minister of State for Apprenticeships and Skills, invited Team UK to the House of Commons for a sendoff. She told them: “You are the future, you are representing the country – and doing us proud.
“We are moving to a world where it’s not about where you come from or whether you went to university – but what skills you can offer to an employer and help them become more productive.
“Visiting the Worldskills Competition last year was probably the most mindblowing experience of my life. It’s about endurance and fortitude.
“When you get there don’t let anything get in your way; you are the best.”
