Newmains Hammers AFC Club of the week

-

The Wishaw Press club of the week are Newmains Hammers Amateur Football Club.

We caught up with Jamie O’rourke from the Hammers to give us an insight into the club and what they hope to achieve in the future. Tell us a bit about the history and background of the club. The club has been established for two years.

We played our first competitive games in August last year.

The club we set up was to give local people from Newmains the chance to play competitive football on a Sunday. How many members does your club have? We have 30 signed members with other lads taking part in training and fitness classes.

The club has a group of dedicated supporters who travel home and away to watch the team.

We are hoping to develop the club over the next few seasons to incorporate other age groups. Tell us about the leagues you compete in. The club takes part in the Airdrie and Coatbridge AFL with affiliation to the Scottish Amateur Football Association (SAFA). Is there a social aspect to the club as well as a sporting side? The club meet in Robin’s Bar in Newmains after games for a buffet.

Opponents are always invited back as we see this social interaction as essential for the development of social skills and a positive frame of mind. What principles do the club represent and promote? We promote fair play and teamwork.

We adopt an all-inclusive approach regardless of ability, religion or culture.

We promote positive mental health as we have been touched by one of our own players who took his own life. Are there any particular difficulties the club faces? There are difficulties playing games in Newmains.

This is due to a lack of facilities, getting funding and sponsorship. How can people get involved with the club? The club has a Facebook page. Search for Newmains Hammers AFC.
