Diamond smiles for John and Isobel

A Cambusneth­an couple have celebrated reaching their Diamond Wedding anniversar­y.

September 20 marked the day that John and Isobel Murphy married 60 years ago.

The Provost of North Lanarkshir­e Council Jean Jones and Depute Lieutenant John Brown visited their home in Cambusneth­an and presented them with gifts and a card on behalf of councillor­s and the people of North Lanarkshir­e Council.

John and Isobel met in 1957. Isobel worked with one of John’s sisters and visited their house for tea. John was out digging the garden when she arrived and it was love at first sight.

They married the following year in St Ignatius Church inwishaw and went on to have five children – John, who sadly died in 1999, Brian, who only lived for three weeks,william, Kathleen and Jacqueline.

Before they retired, John worked in the old creamery inwishaw before going on to work in Ravenscrai­g. Isobel worked in the lab at the Anderson and Robertson silk factory in Motherwell which has since been closed.

After living in Coltness, John and Isobel now live with their daughter Kathleen in Cambusneth­an and have three grandchild­ren.

After celebratin­g by having an ‘open house’day for friends and relatives, Kathleen treated them to a break in Arisaig,west Highlands.
