Gas pipe work to hit drivers

Ten days to carry out upgrade

Wishaw Press - - ROADS WARNING - Ross Thomson

Wishaw drivers and residents will be faced with 10 days of upheaval as work begins on upgrading the gas network.

Gas distribution company SGN will start work later this week to modernise the gas supply network in Heathery Road in Wishawhill.

The street will be closed while the work is completed while drivers will have to contend with one lane being closed on Glasgow Road for traffic entering Wishaw town centre.

SGN project manager John Donegan sympathised with motorists but insists the short-term closure will be worth it. He said: “A lot of planning has gone into this project and we’ll be doing everything we can to limit disruption.

“We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating.

“However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means once the work has been completed, Wishaw homes and businesses will enjoy the benefits of a continued safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.”

The company are investing around £225,000 to upgrade the gas network in Heathery Road.

The essential work involves the replacement of old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.

Following discussions with North Lanarkshire Council, SGN contractors will start work on the project on Saturday. The street will be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of road users and contractors, Smart Utilities Scotland.

The work will be the second major disruption in and around the centre of Wishaw taking place.

Last week, we reported that the one- way section at Kenilworth Avenue will be closed for 10 working days to allow for the road to be widened as well as repairs to the road surface, footpath and kerbs at this junction.
