Fall in finished houses

MSP slams stats

- Ian Bunting

A Central Scotland MSP has claimed that a fall in house building completions across North Lanarkshire “undermines local people’s standard of living”.

Graham Simpson was responding to figures revealed in Housing Statistics for Scotland’s quarterly update that show completed homes in the region decreased by 27 per cent from 2016 to last year.

Mr Simpson, the Scottish Conservatives’ housing spokesman, hit out at the SNP Government, saying: “The SNP’S complacency on housing is staggering.

“When we talk about housing, we are talking about the homes that provide the security and opportunity for families to not only grow but flourish.

“This dramatic fall in house building completions across North Lanarkshire undermines local people’s standard of living and the future of our young people.”

Mr Simpson also claimed his party would provide North Lanarkshire with more completed homes.

He added: “The Scottish Conservatives have outlined innovative proposals to revitalise the housing sector.

“Ruth Davidson’s [Scottish Tory leader] proposals included a commitment to build 100,000 new homes over the course of this parliament – with half of them affordable housing.

“The SNP must get back to work and deliver – and a lot more than they currently have.

“Only the Scottish Conservatives can stand up to the SNP, and deliver for the people of North Lanarkshire – and Scotland.”
