D-day for residents in 150 new homes bid

Fate to be decided

- Ross Thomson

D-day is approaching for Morningside residents as they battle to stop a major housing development on their doorstep.

A planning sub- committee meeting, which will decide the fate of the plans to build up to 150 homes on land at West Morningside has been scheduled for next Tuesday, October 23.

Last month it was revealed that the land, formerly greenbelt, has now been re-zoned for housing in the council’s new Local Development Plan.

Morningside councillor Clare Quigley will speak on behalf of residents at the hearing.

Councillor Quigley said: “Residents just got through the first fight they had about homes being built on that site and breathed a huge sigh of relief.

“Meanwhile, scurrying up the side was this re-zoning change.

“Sewage is the main problem. We understand Scottish Water has not adopted two pump stations from previous developers which is very worrying.

“On top of that there are other problems.

“Poor public transport links, a lack of places at the local doctor’s surgery and the primary school being over-subscribed.

“There is also a lot of wildlife nearby. Deer, badgers and bats will all be wiped out.

“There are lots of problems but the main one is the sewage system.”

Applicant Robert Hill had appealed to the Scottish Government after Nor th Lanarkshire Council threw out original plans back in 2015.

The appeal was rejected after concerns regarding the sewage system and that the new homes would have a colossal impact on the nearby Morningside Primary as well as being built on greenbelt land. Over 60 residents have already submitted their objections to the proposals.
