Club of the week Carluke Golf Club
We caught up with club secretary Gavin White to find out more about the club as they approach their 125th anniversary next year. Tell us a bit about the history and background of the club. The club was founded in 1894 and has been on its present site, originally part of the Mauldslie Estate, since 1910.
It will be celebrating its 125-year anniversary in 2019.
The club badge includes three crosses on its diagonal as a tribute to the memory of three local men who were awarded the Victoria Cross.
The Latin motto‘ad Meliora’ translated means ’Towards Better Things’, particularly appropriate to the golf club members. How many members does your club have? We have over 700 members in our various membership categories, including a very active ladies’section and a good number of enthusiastic juniors, including some very promising girls. Juniors are welcome to join the club from the age of eight. Adult memberships include seven day, six day and five day members. Tell us about the leagues you compete in. The club has a number of competitive teams – gents, ladies, juniors and seniors. All compete in their respective leagues, both within Lanarkshire and Clydesdale. Is there a social aspect to the club as well as a sporting side? We have a social membership of over 100 non-playing ladies and gents, who enjoy a wide variety of functions shared with the playing members. These are organised by our social committee assisted by our catering team who provide an outstanding service for all our members. What principles do the club represent and promote? The club’s constitution makes it clear that our fundamental principle is to foster the game of golf for all who wish to play, without prejudice of any kind and to make our facilities available to anyone who wishes to be part of the club. Are there any particular difficulties the club faces? The club is running smoothly at the moment and is on a sound footing. Our only difficulty, in common with all local clubs, is coping with the ever changing weather patterns which impact on our course maintenance and development.
We have an ongoing programme of upgrading our greens to meet modern standards as well as constantly trying to improve other aspects of the course and improving club house facilities. How can people get involved with the club? Involvement with the club is easy, either through the club website, or by phone on 01555 770574, extension 1.
