Sweet memories of popular Wishaw shop

Do you all remember Kings sweets?

- LYNN LOVE

Sweets are on everyone’s minds this week as we remember popular confectionary store Kings which shut up shop in 1989.

To mark the 30 years since the Main Street sweet shop closed, we took to the streets of Wishaw to ask locals their memories of Kings.

Thomas Smith said he remembers the shop well. He added: “It was great. I loved going in there when I was a kid. I would get the broken rock because that was all I could afford. I loved it.”

Betty Mcleish, of Kirknethan, actually worked in Kings factory from 1951 to 1955. She said: “I made the Oddfellows. As well as being the most popular sweet sold in the shop, they were popular all over the world.

“They were lovely. We made pink, orange and yellow ones. It brings back great memories when I think about them.”

Angela Cullen said thinking about Kings takes her back to working in Kirkwood Fashion. She added: “Every Saturday my boss would send me to buy a quarter of chocolate covered Russian caramels. They were lovely.”

Edward Blakeway, pictured with his grandson MJ, 5, also worked for Kings. The Wishawhill man said: “I was a van boy for Kings for a good few years. It was a great company. How it shut, I’ll never know. The chocolate eclairs were my favourite.”
