Charity champ receives MBE

A Carluke charity champion was presented with her MBE at Buckingham Palace.

mum-of-two Gill murray received her well deserved gong from the Duke of Cambridge in recognitio­n of her fundraisin­g efforts.

she was accompanie­d by her husband Jim and their two daughters.

speaking afterwards, Gill said:“it was a surreal two days and I was pleased my family were with me as they have helped me with the charity work down the years.

“I will cherish the memories for the rest of my life.”

Beauty therapist Gill, 53, has been a fundraiser for a range of charities over four decades.

In particular, she has generated £141,500 for Cancer Research over 22 years and £25,000 for children’s charity Action medical Research during her 17 years as one of their school champions.

Gill undertakes large and small fundraisin­g projects when she‘sees a need,’visits schools and every year stages a large Cancer Research charity day in a Carluke church hall.

Before her visit to Buckingham Palace, Gill was invited to Westminste­r where she received a tour of parliament by scottish secretary David mundell.

mr mundell described Gill’s ongoing charity efforts as‘inspiring.’

he added:“i was delighted to host Gill and her family atwestmins­ter. I’ve been greatly impressed by her energetic and untiring work for worthy causes, both in my constituen­cy and further afield.”

Gill was honoured in last year’s Queen’s Birthday honours List.

speaking to thewishaw Press in the days following the announceme­nt, Gill said:“i held my first fundraisin­g event when I was 14 and I was still at school. since then I’ve worked for Cancer Research for 22 years and Action medical Research for the last 16 years.

“All my family are absolutely delighted. they do a lot of work and I can’t thank them enough.

“Although I have received the award, the money raised would not be possible without my team of helpers.

“this award is for them and everyone in the community who supports our events.”
