Tripping the lights FANTASTIC!

- BEN RAMAGE

A dedicated amateur Wishaw photographer braved - 5’ C conditions to bag the picture he’d been chasing for more than two years.

Security engineer Ross Shevlin picked up a love of the lens when he started climbing munros around Scotland.

And despite collecting brilliant snaps from across the country, the Northern Lights over Loch Lomond is the one he’s always wanted most.

On the last day of January, he finally fulfilled his wish.

Buzzing Ross said: “I have gone to Milarrochy Bay in Balmaha at Loch Lomond so many times in the hope of seeing the aurora, but each time they failed to show due to low activity or high cloud cover.

“On January 31 I was checking aurora forecast websites and one indicated it would be a KP5 rating, meaning there was a high chance of activity.

“It was a freezing cold night, but we took the chance on it and I’m so glad we did.”

Ross set off with his camera shooting partner and brother in law Graham Williamson, and pal Paul Nevans, to the famous spot and set up the tripods hoping to get the dream shot.

And when they saw the results on their camera screens, they couldn’t hide their delight.

Ross said: “When we got there the aurora reading was 5 to 5.6, which is the strongest I’ve ever seen it.

“We got the dream shot with the tree in the foreground and were honestly jumping around like kids when we saw the green on our screens! It was so cold, -5’C, but we didn’t care. We were too busy celebrating to notice the weather.

“It’s definitely one of my best shots and such a relief to get it off the bucket list after so long.”
