Scouting for talent

- BEN RAMAGE

Newmains United have set up a scouting department which they hope will help them identify new players.

RBS manager John Tunstead will head up the new-look structure.

Buildings services manager and exLanarkshire Locos star Garry Campbell and James Hamilton - who starred for Coagh United in his native Northern Ireland – have also come on board.

The trio will now attend games to recommend possible new recruits and assess upcoming opposition.

Tunstead might work in finance by day but he reckons Newmains can bank on everyone giving their all.

He said: “I’m really excited to have got this opportunity with Newmains.

“I was attracted to join as I wanted to be a part of a club to hopefully play in part in them progressing. Newmains are a club with a great history who are taking all the right steps to build for the future.”

Tunstead already compiles football data for online statistical company Iscout.

He added: “I’ve always been a massive football fan and I decided to apply for the Iscout role alongside my day job at the bank.

“That has given me experience in attending games and providing statistical analysis on matches which will hopefully help me when it comes to identifying new talent for Newmains.”

Co-manager Craig Gupwell added: “We’re really pleased to have brought the three guys on board.

“From speaking to them it’s clear they all have a passion and drive for the game, as well as an eye for a player.

“We are looking forward to working with them and hearing their input during the season.”
