Fury as workers dump waste in park

Unscrupulous construction workers have dumped tonnes of building rubble on recreational ground in Newmains.

Residents living nearby received a rude awakening on Saturday morning when the materials were heard crashing off the back of a truck atwest Crindledyke Playing Fields.

Thomas Mcguinness, 38, whose Stewart Crescent house backs on to the park, went to see what the commotion was.

He had already noticed that materials had been dumped the day before and was woken by loud noise before 8am on Saturday.this time he discovered a huge pile of bricks and mortar, slabs and old timber had been dumped in the grounds.

“They dumped a load of it on Friday and then on Saturday morning it was like thunder,”he revealed.

“We have scaffolding around the house just now and I thought there were people running about on the roof it was that loud.

“I looked out the back and I saw a white flatbed tipper driving away.”

West Crindledyke Playing Fields is the site for the annual Newmains Gala Day celebrations, and known locally as the Gala Day Park.

The area is well used all year round by the Newmains community and is very popular with dog walkers.

The dumpers used the cover of a high hedge to prevent anyone from the adjacent houses seeing them off-load the waste materials.

Thomas continued:“it’s all slabs and groundwork materials.

“It’s really bad and it’s right on the footpath.there are people in wheelchairs who can’t get by now.

“There’s been stuff dumped before but this is the first in about three years.

“It looks as if it’s been a complete overhaul of someone’s garden as there’s bits of a wall in it.”

In amongst the rubblethomas also discovered a high-vis jacket and a cap, both with different company logos.

He added:“surely they wouldn’t be stupid enough to leave them if they belonged to the company they work for?

“Myself and another guy took some pictures and they’ve been sent to the council.”
