Wishy run aground at Port Glasgow

PORT GLASGOW 2 - 0 WISHAW JUNIORS Two goals in the space of a minute saw Wishaw Juniors crash to an opening day loss.

Wishaw travelled down Clydeside for the opening fixture of the league with Kieran Mcguinness fielding a young side.

Wishaw were first to show, breaking quickly upfield only for Mick Mcgaraghan to be fouled. KB Grant took the free kick but shot just over.

After quarter of an hour Wishaw were awarded a free kick on the right after a foul on Liam O’kane but the chance was wasted.

The home side were then lucky to escape the referee’s attention after Scott Crone was clearly elbowed in the face by Kearns.

The first goal came just after from a penalty kick by Port’s Mckay after a foul by O’kane.

Before the visitors got a chance to settle and get back into the game they found themselves two goals down.

The home side quickly won the ball after the restart and Mckay fired in a fierce volley against the advancing Wishaw keeper Robert Mcmahon who managed to keep out the first effort but was unable to stop him firing home the rebound.

Wishaw were clearly rattled by the loss of the two goals but battled hard to keep the rampant home side at bay until half time with Mcgarahan coming closest for the visitors - first with a chip shot then again with a second effort just before the half time whistle.

In the second half the visitors battled to get themselves back into the game with early efforts by KB Grant and Ross Marchant coming close.

Crone came close for Wishaw after 55 minutes but his shot was just wide.

A minute later Wishaw’s Grant pounced on an O’kane corner but the ball was cleared and the home side charged up the pitch in numbers and Donnachie headed just wide from a cross ball.

Midway through the half Grant appeared to have broken clear on goal but the referee ruled the Wishaw player offside despite his vehement protests.

Wishaw put on James Coffey and Gary Graham and Grant had another good effort on goal touched away by the keeper late in the game but the home side stood firm to see out the match and take all three points.
