BREAK A LEG

A Wishaw teenager went for broke in her exams this year after missing a large chunk of school following a horror leg break.

Lauren Watson, right, fractured her leg in three places following an accident on a trampoline at Coltness High in January last year.

The teenager had a long road to recovery and had her leg in plaster for five months meaning she missed large periods of school ahead of National 5 exams in May 2018.

However, after battling back to lessons in August, Lauren managed to get two As and three Bs, including four Higher passes this time around.

The 16-year-old said: “I was on the trampoline and for whatever reason I had a really bad landing and broke both the tibia and fibia in three places. It was horrible.

“I went straight to hospital and was in a full leg cast for seven weeks. I was getting work home but it wasn’t the same and I was on really heavy painkillers which made me very sleepy and when I went back to school I was only there half a day.

“In August I knew I really had to work hard to try and get the results I needed because I had missed a lot of the last year.

“I was absolutely buzzing when my results came in.

“I knew I had worked very hard and I feel like I don’t cope well with stress so it was a big weight off my shoulders.”

Lauren, who is bidding to go to university to study primary teaching, gained her As in music and maths with Bs in French, English and food technology.
