Siblings’bar scoops inaugural prize
The brother and sister team behind Wishaw pub Corrigan’s have raised a glass to their loyal punters after they were crowned the inaugural Wishaw Press Pub of the Year.
Derek Wyse and Tracey Broadfoot have run Corrigan’s Bar and Grill for the last six years, building a strong reputation for serving excellent pints, food and patter in equal measure.
And they insist that the hotly contested award will have pride of place behind the bar on Stewarton Street as tribute to the continued backing of their locals. Delighted Derek said: “This is an absolutely great achievement for the pub.
“We’re totally surprised because we were up against a lot of bigger pubs in the area.
“To be the first to win this award makes it even sweeter too.
“We’ve got a lot of brilliant regulars and I’d just like to say a big thanks to all of them for helping us to this success.”
Derek took over Corrigan’s having already run a Wetherspoons pub in Motherwell.
Tracey joined shortly after and the dynamic duo have turned the pub into a popular eatery and watering hole in Wishaw.
Tracey insists that the siblings hardly ever argue, despite the modern day challenges of running a pub in 2019.
She said: “It’s a hard game running a pub these days.
“There’s a lot of difficulties with so many other pubs to compete with, running costs and so much more.
“People think we’ll argue because we’re brother and sister but we’re always fine because he’s just a good guy.
“I’m the bad guy and he’s the good guy! Our regulars help keep us ticking over and I think the best thing about here is that everyone’s always made welcome.
“That’s not the always the case in some pubs.
“That comes down to our staff, most of which are from Wishaw, who make a big difference.
“They’re all so friendly and hardworking.
“We owe so much to all of our amazing staff.”
The Wishaw Press Pub of the Year Award is now sitting proudly above the busy bar.
Derek added: “We’ll definitely be trying to keep a hold of it next year!”
