Will plea to maintain a safe Haven

- MICHAEL PRINGLE

A charity with a centre in Wishaw is urging people to consider leaving it a little something in their wills.

The Haven provides support to people across Lanarkshire with life limiting illnesses, and their families and carers.

It relies on the public for crucial funding and has launched a campaign to increase awareness of legacy giving.

For the last four years its centre in the grounds of University Hospital Wishaw has helped hundreds of people with a range of illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. The charity also has two other centres in Blantyre and Forth.

The new campaign aims to increase awareness of the difference people can make to The Haven’s vital work by leaving the charity a legacy gift in their will.

Karen Boyd, community engagement co-ordinator at The Haven said: “You may not know this but many charities wouldn’t be able to continue without the gifts they are left in wills. By remembering your chosen charity in this way, you are ensuring that the good work they do is able to be carried on for years to come.

“The gift you leave can be anything you wish, no matter the size of donation every single penny counts.

“We understand that friends and family will always come first but by leaving a gift in your Will you are leaving your legacy. We rely on the support of the communities we work in so would like to give this information out to give people the chance to be able to help us, to ensure we can continue to support as many families as possible affected by a life limiting illness.”

The Haven provide support to people of all ages, and at all stages of their illness from diagnosis.

The Haven has a team of dedicated nurses, therapists and volunteers, and operate a drop- in centre without the need of a referral from a health professional.

They also offer complementary therapies such as Indian head massage, reiki and reflexology, and all services are provided free of charge.

“Leaving a gift to The Haven in your Will is a valuable and meaningful way to ensure that future generations wi l l b e supported through life limiting illness”, Karen continued.

“As more and more people are diagnosed with a life limiting illness The Haven will only grow and we must ensure that we can continue to provide our programme of support which helps individuals cope with the physical, emotional and practical aspects of their illness and to enable them to face the future positively and with hope.”

The Haven has put together an information leaflet which contains all the information about legacy giving to allow people to make an informed decision.

They advise that leaving a legacy gift in their will is not something anyone should take lightly, and should be given a lot of thought.

The leaflet also outlines the promise The Haven will make to anyone who decides to leave a legacy to the charity.

A copy of the legacy leaflet and more information is available by contacting The Haven on 01698 727505 or from any of their centres.
