Start to year

The new academic year in St Aidan’s has been a busy time.

The success of the students in the SQA examinations was tremendous.

The staff are delighted with the achievements of the pupils in this year’s National Qualifications.

Pupils in S4-S6 were successful in gaining passes across a range of academic and vocational subjects from National 3 through to Advanced Higher.

They achieved the school’s highest ever percentage pass rate for five Highers in S5.

Among those were Claudia Kawik and Emily Lebida from S6 who gained five A passes at Higher.

Claudia said: “I was very happy and very relieved when I opened the envelope. I knew I was now on track towards my ambition of a career in medicine.”

Also pictured are students who gained seven A passes at National 5 level.

Meanwhile, the annual celebration of the feast day of Saint Aidan has been celebrated by Bishop Toal.

This major event in the school year sees the new S1 students and our S6 join together for the occasion.

Fantastic contributions by the school band and choir created a tremendous atmosphere and the opportunity was taken to acknowledge the thousands of pounds raised for charity

by the school community over the last year.

Bishop Toal said: “It is good to get the opportunity to honour Saint Aidan and reflect on his sainthood. I don’t always get the opportunity to work with such a big group of young people.

“St Aidan’s High School is a great community. I always feel at home here; you get the sense that people are cared for.”

Bishop Toal was greeted as he arrived by the school’s new Captains team.

Vice-captain, Aidan Campbell said: “It’s a privilege to work with pupils, staff and the wider community.”

Headteacher, Claire Connelly added: “The feast day mass is all about being proud of our identity, about who we are.

“We are a Catholic school, we are inspired by Saint Aidan, that’s who we are named after and his story was of taking faith to many people to make their lives better.

“So, for us it is absolutely imperative that we celebrate this day because first and foremost we are here to develop young people in their faith so that they become the best that they can be, and go out into the world, use their talents, help and serve others and generally contribute to making the world a better place.”
