More than 250 people died awaiting discharge from Lanarkshire’s hospitals since July 2016. Charity Age Scotland have called the deaths “tragic” and have now demanded urgent action to tackle the problem. Readers had mixed views.

Firing all the money at the NHS while cutting council funding resulting in support at home services being overloaded is what causes the bottle neck and impacts on the discharges.

Closing smaller hospitals and other off site units means people are stuck in hospitals longer than they should be. Alison Reid

Very often they go above and beyond. Whilst these deaths are tragic this type of publicity doesn’t help.

Part of the issue is recruitment of staff. Who wants to work somewhere when this is what they read in the press?! Budgets are ever decreasing but they do try find smarter more effective ways of working even under these extreme pressures. Marc Howard

Ambulance staff across Lanarkshire were assaulted 39 times in 2018. Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request revealed there were 21 physical assaults and 18 verbal assaults on ambulance staff last year - the same as in 2017.

Tip of the iceberg, I’d bet these were only the most serious of the assaults.

A massive amount more would’ve went unreported and not shown in stats. Anne Cassells

That’s because the courts don’t protect our emergency services.

Put them behind bars. No more slaps on the wrist. We all need these workers at some time so start to protect them. Robert Gray
