The second meeting of the new season of Allanton SWI will be held in the church hall on Monday, October 14. The ladies will welcome guest speaker, Cameron Merryweath­er, who will be talk about Glasgow cathedral. Cameron volunteers as a guide at the cathedral and will share his vast knowledge and history of the building. During the session members take part in a variety of talks, activities and competitio­ns to brighten up the long, dark winter evenings. They are also looking forward to their Christmas lunch. The Lanarkshir­e federation of the SWI has further inter-branch events and competitio­ns, as well as a strong presence at the Ingleston Highland show. The group meets on the second Monday of each month at 7.30pm in Allanton Church hall.

OVERTOWN

CHURCH

The service on Sunday will celebrate harvest thanksgivi­ng in Overtown Parish Church at 11am. It will include a retiring offering and donations for the local food bank would be welcomed. There will also be a crèche for younger children.

All visitors to the church will be made most welcome.

The church will be open on Wednesdays from 11am to noon for quiet prayer and contemplat­ion; all are welcome.

LUNCH CLUB

Serves lunches each Monday from noon until 2pm. Two courses are provided for £4, comprising of main course with tea/coffee or juice followed by dessert. A takeaway service is also available if it is required. LINE DANCING CLASSES

The classes are held on Wednesdays in the hall of Overtown church, starting with a beginners’ and refreshers’ class from 12.30pm. Followed by the main class from 1.15pm until 2.45pm, all ages and abilities are welcome. WOMEN’S GROUP

The ladies of the women’s group welcome all, including any local gentlemen to an evening of nostalgia. Former Radio Clyde DJ, Dave Marshall, will present an evening of song, fun, and laughter from a bygone era. It will be an open evening to which all are welcome. It will be hosted in the large hall of Overtown church on Wednesday, October 9 at 7.30pm. Admission costs £5; and includes a light supper.

Cllr Heather McVey, the council’s equality champion, said:“I think everyone who attended will have benefited from the range of support and advice which was made available.
“We’re always looking at fresh ways to improve outcomes and experience­s for women in relation to these three areas.”
The event included workshops and stalls providing informatio­n on employment opportunit­ies, women’s rights, access to services and community safety.
