After a lovely meal, Mae gave a talk on how Inner Wheel can expand by making more people aware of what clubs do to help charities and promote true friendships. The vote of thanks was given by Marjorie McGeary. The group’s next meeting will be on November 5. MOTHERWELL PHOTO SOCIETY

Hunter Kennedy was the club’s second guest speaker. Hunter is a very experienced photographer and his presentation reflected that fact. It was on a variety of subjects including Landscapes, Sport and Street Photography. The locations ranged from Scotland to Tuscany.

He gave a very insightful explanation of each image, detailing where it was taken and any special methods used. He also passed on some very useful techniques to be used when taking photographs, especially Landscapes and Sport. Brian Saberton, on behalf of the members, thanked Hunter for his fascinating presentation.

At next week’s meeting on October10, the speaker will be Paul Millar. His presentation is entitled “My Landscapes and Prints” and, knowing Paul, it should be a very entertaining evening. ROTARY

The guest speaker at last Thursday’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Swiss academic, author and practitioner in the field of international law, Professor Nils Melzer. He is Professor of International Law at the University of Glasgow, and also holds the Human Rights Chair at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, where he has been teaching since 2009, including as the Swiss Chair of International

Humanitarian Law. Since November 2016, Professor Melzer has been serving as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and it was his experiences in this role that formed the basis for his address. Professor Melzer’s address was both powerful and thought provoking and his audience was held spellbound. The volume of questions posed was an indication of the interest generated. The vote of thanks was proposed by Past President Ian Carroll. BOWLING CLUB
