Shotts happy with a derby day point

- MARK PIRIE

Shotts Bon Accord boss John McKeown admitted he would have taken a point against Gartcairn before kick-off on North Lanarkshire derby day.

A last-gasp Liam Crichton spot-kick earned the Airdrie rivals a point at MTC Park.

Jordan Craig’s opener for the visitors was cancelled out by Ryan Donnelly, before Jordan Love fired Shotts in front once again.

However, in injury time the referee pointed to the spot and Crichton calmly slotted the ball into the net.

“Before the game we’d have taken a point,” said the gaffer.

“We had to use trialists to fill the bench because of our injuries and suspensions, so if you’d have offered me a point at their place I’d have been happy.

“Saying that, the way we drew the game and concede from a penalty we were obviously gutted.

“Gartcairn are a good side and the pitch doesn’t really suit the way we want to play. It’s a poor pitch, an old astroturf that doesn’t help the way we want to play the game.

“No team really dominated the game, it was really open and both sides would probably say they deserved to win.

“We hit the post as well after our player had rounded the goalkeeper. It’s one of those days really.

”They stuck at it until the very end and got their point.”

Bonny will now face Irvine Victoria this weekend and McKeown expects his injury woes to have eased.

“We are expecting to have a few more back this weekend,” he said.

“Since the opening two weeks of the season I haven’t been able to play the same two squads back-to-back.

“We want to keep staying in the promotion conversation, and consistency is going to help us.

“The three players that were out last weekend through suspension will be back this weekend, which is a big help.

“We will probably still be without two, but to welcome back even more at this point is a big help.

“We have been down to the bare bones at training so it will be good to have most of our squad back.”
