Boss praises ‘Well top Scots

Polworth and Campbell can be internationals

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson reckons midfield duo Liam Polworth and Allan Campbell will be joining Declan Gallagher in the Scotland squad soon.

The Fir Park boss was speaking after goals from James Scott and second half substitute Chris Long handed his side a comfortable 2-0 league win over St Mirren in Lanarkshire.

Robinson believes that if midfielders Liam Polworth and Allan Campbell will be in Steve Clarke’s plans if they keep up their recent form.

Centre-back Gallagher was drafted into the squad for ties against Russia and San Marino last weekend.

Robinson revealed that he had casually dropped the names of his midfield duo into a conversation with Clarke.

The boss said: “We had some excellent performances and I thought Liam Polworth was outstanding. His work-rate and energy were brilliant and it was a super performance.

“He is someone who I think can improve even more. Technically he is very good and he reminds me of David Turnbull.

“If he keeps improving and gets stronger then he has a chance of getting to the top of the game.

“I spoke to Steve Clarke about a few of our players but he has a hard enough job without me giving him names.

“He is a super manager and I have so much respect for him. Given the time he will turn Scotland around.

“I know he has watched a few of our players and Allan Campbell, Declan Gallagher and Polworth have all done great. It’s another clean sheet if you get them then you have a chance to win every game.”

It was St Mirren who threatened first on seven minutes when Ilkay Durmus cross from the left was flicked on by Obika but it trundled inches wide of target.

In the 11th minute St Mirren goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky got down well to his right to beat away Liam Polworth’s low 20 yard strike.

Two minutes later Sherwin Seedorf was next to have a go when he danced his way into the St Mirren penalty area and slammed in a drive that cannoned off the legs of Hladky.

Polworth then ruined a good opportunity when he seemed to be clean through on goal but checked back before hitting a harmless shot past the post from the edge of the area.

Less than a minute later Polworth side-footed weakly into Hladky’s chest from 12 yards as Motherwell broke away up the other end on the counter attack following Saints set-piece.On 35 minutes Poloworth then played in Cole who went one-on-one with Hladky but the Czech shot-topper once again got the better of the duel to snuff out the danger with another crucial block.

However Hladky was beaten all ends up on 39 minutes with a quite superb opening goal from the home side.James

Scott weaved in and around the penalty area before turning and unleashing a sublime curling right footed shot that exploded high past Hladky in the St Mirren net.

Hladky then produced an absolute wonder save from Polworth when he dived full length to his left to keep out yet another 20 yard effort from the midfielder.

Kyle Magennis then thought he had equalised on 72 minutes but his piledriver was incredibly headed away by Peter Hartley.

Saints substitute Junior Morias then a shot palmed away by Gillespie before the ball was returned and Ryan Flynn ballooned over the top from the edge.

It was game, set and match to Motherwell four minutes from time.

Substitute Chris Long skipped inside McLoughlin and picked his spot to rifle high into the net on 86 minutes to make it 2-0 to the Steelmen as Robinson’s men remained in third spot, four points clear of Aberdeen.
