Coltness clean-up

-

Wellies, sun loungers and paint tins wereamong the items cleaned up by volunteers aiming to make Wishaw litter free.

The Coltness clean-up is a monthly event aimed at making sure the area is spotless.

Coltness community council member Graham Butt is one of those leading the clean-up campaign.

He said:“The site looks amazing without the litter spoiling the landscape.

“Coltness has nearly 300 hectares of forestry, being utilised by cyclists, walkers, researchers, runners and fisherman, unfortunately it is not being maintained.

“We need to keep the place tidy for all and with recent cuts to councils we decided to take action as a community.

“Spending time in the outdoors has been proven to help with mental health, depression and lower stress levels.

“We will be carrying out more work in Coltness and Wishaw forestry, so anyone who wants to help can join.

“We meet at the Carrick Hall every second Tuesday of the month and welcome anyone and everyone.”

At the last clean-up, the volunteers spent two days clearing up woodland.

There were around 15 volunteers who cleared a section of forestry just off North Dryburgh Road that leads down to the South CalderWater.

Community council chairman John Carr added: “It was great to see a few residents come out in force and help clear the area.

“It was a tremendous effort by everyone and hopefully this will just be the start.

“We are hoping that if people see volunteers out tidying up it will make them think twice about littering in the woodlands.

“We can make noises to the council about uplifts or bins but we don’t want to be living in a run down area and we have to do something about it.”
