St Aidan’s pupils have write stuff

-

Pupils at St Aidan’s High had a chance to question the Wishaw Press recently.

The Journalism, Media and Communications (JMAC) students had a Q&A session with Gregor Farquharson during their class time.

The keen pupils chatted with Gregor on what it takes to report the news and offered their ideas on what the Wishaw Press should cover.

The JMAC class has been running in St Aidan’s for just over three years and is organised by teacher Mr Gerry O’Brien.

He said: “We started this module three years ago and it has been a great success.

“We have actually had a number of ex-pupils go on to study journalism at the likes of Edinburgh Napier University. Tutors at various universities have praised the work that ex-pupils have shown them.”

The class meet three times a week and run a blog, in which all the material is contributed by them.

Daphne Miller, 16, said: “Through JMAC we have met so many interesting people.

“For the blog, we have covered big events in the school such as the junior awards ceremony.

“Some pieces on there have also been picked up by other publications, like the Scottish Catholic Observer.

“It is a brilliant opportunity for us.”

The JMAC classes’ biggest challenge is writing the school news page for the paper every week.

Mr O’Brien said: “The class are very independent when writing the school news and always know what they want to include.”

During the session, pupils quizzed Gregor on why he wanted to be a journalist and what he enjoyed about the role. Gregor said it was a “pleasure” to meet the pupils engaged in the media and the course.
