The SEARCH is over for quality students

- MICHAEL PRINGLE

An employability programme running at University Hospital Wishaw for young adults with additional support needs has received national recognition with a coveted award.

An outstanding 88 per cent of students taking part in the SEARCH project at the Wishaw hospital completed it and went on to gain employment.

The Wishaw project and another running at Monklands hospital were recognised for their achievements at the DFN Project SEARCH Conference and Awards Ceremony.

Both were commended and received Employment Outcome Awards in recognition of their fantastic achievement of over 70 per cent of the number of their students completing the project and gaining employment.

Three-quarters of the students participating in the project at Monklands went on to complete the course and move into jobs.

There are 67 sites operating across the UK, and 16 of them received awards including the two in North Lanarkshire.

The SEARCH service provides vital support, training and employment opportunities for young adults in the area.

Donella Duff, supported enterprise manager with North Lanarkshire Council, said: “We’re delighted our Project SEARCH sites in Monklands and Wishaw have been recognised at this national level but what’s even more pleasing is the results they’re delivering helping young adults secure and retain employment.

“Our students tell us that the elements of classroom learning and skill development from work placements increases their confidence and chance of securing employment in the general job market.

“Key to the project’s success is the strong partnership working in place between the two employers — NHS Lanarkshire and Serco; education partner, New College Lanarkshire and supported employment provider North Lanarkshire Council.

“Well done to everyone involved in making Project SEARCH such a success.”
