Anger at ATM axe
A Wishaw councillor has hit out at TSB over its plans to axe its free ATM machine in Wishaw, despite there being a five per cent increase in usage.
Councillor Bob Burgess has raised concerns over this decision, as it may impact some of the most vulnerable within the local area, as people could be forced to use feecharging ATMs.
As fee-charging ATMs are on the rise, this may force people to travel further to withdraw their money to avoid being charged.
The Tory elected member has called on TSB to reconsider its “irresponsible decision”, as a full consultation has not taken place.
If TSB decides to follow this decision through, there may be a strong backlash from the local community.
Councillor Burgess said: “This irresponsible decision by TSB may impact some of the most vulnerable in our community.
“If free ATMs continue to decline, many will be forced to use the fee-charging ATMs which could put further financial pressure on those who may be on the breadline.
“I believe that TSB should consult the local community properly as there has been an increase of usage at this particular ATM.
“Should this ATM be removed without engagement from the people of Wishaw, there may be a strong backlash from those who rely on this free cash withdrawal service.
“I hope that TSB reconsider and continue to provide this much needed service in Wishaw.”
TSB revealed in September last year that its branches in Stewarton Street in Wishaw and High Street, Carluke would be amongst the 17 closing.
The Wishaw branch is due to close in September this year with the branch in Carluke closing a couple of months earlier, and both towns losing their ATMs.
Of the 17 machines earmarked for removal from use, eight either show an increase in the number of people using them, or show no change.
The Wishaw machine was one of four to show an increase in usage.
The others were; Jedburgh in the Borders, which showed a rise of 13 per cent; the machine in Govan, Glasgow witnessed a 10 per cent increase; while usage of the ATM at Clarkston on the outskirts of Glasgow rose by six per cent.
Following the announcement, a TSB spokesman said: “We are very conscious of the need to ensure customers continue to have access to banking services, including free-to-use ATMs.
“The four branches highlighted — Wishaw, Jedburgh, Govan and Clarkston — all have numerous free-to-use ATMs within a few hundred metres of the branches.
“Almost nine in 10 customers who use the branches in question already use alternative branches or currently use mobile, digital or telephone services.”
