Nursery slammed by inspectors in report

- ROSS THOMSON

A nursery at a Motherwell school has been slammed by inspectors.

The nursery at Our Lady and St Francis Primary School in Carfin was told that it had made “insufficent progress” since its original inspection in December 2018.

A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council said: “We are working closely with the management team and the acting head teacher to ensure that all the areas relating to the follow up inspection for nursery class are addressed as a priority.”

In her report, inspector Pamela Adamson hit out at the lack of progress within the nursery since the previous report.

She said: “The acting headteacher has had no deputy since the summer.

“This is adversely affecting the change.

“Significant staff absence meant the lack of involvement of practioners in the improvement journey.

“Overall, progress in relation to strengthening approaches to monitoring and evalutating the work of the nursery, and tracking children’s progress, is very limited.”

The report also states there has been very limited progress in helping staff assessing children’s development.

However, staff were praised in certain areas including for giving clearer leadership.

The inspector added: “Practioners have benefited from visits to other nurseries to share practice.

“Their knowledge of all children across the nursery has improved as a result.

“This is beginning to meet the needs of a few children.

“The nursery has taken positive action to improve the learning environment.

“With support from staff from a neighbouring nursery, the indoor and outdoor learning environments have improved signficantly.

“Although children with additional support needs are more engaged in the current learning environment more work needs to be done to meet their learning needs.”
