CHRIS IS THE HISTORY BOY Bellator main event for fight star

- MARK PIRIE

Holytown fighter Chris Bungard will make history as he becomes the first Scot to headline a major MMA promotion – but he almost missed the call while in the Sahara Desert.

The mixed-martial artist will top the bill at the 3Arena in Dublin on Saturday as he clashes with former light-heavyweight champion Brent Primus at Bellator 240.

The 31-year-old was called up by the American giants to replace injured Peter Queally just last month while on holiday in Tunisia.

The Scot had to make a quick return for the dream bout to arrive back at the Scottish Hit Squad for his fight camp.

He said: “I was in the Sahara Desert on the back of a camel and got a bit of data roaming on it.

“It was about £100 for the five minutes and got a call from Bellator asking if I wanted the Brent Primus fight.

“I spoke to my coach and it was a massive opportunity; you will maybe never get the chance to headline a Bellator card ever.

“You don’t know how your career goes with injuries and results.

“Brent Primus is an elite athlete, and it will be a tough job but we wouldn’t take the fight if we didn’t think we could win it.”

Bungard is now counting down the minutes until he walks out in front of a sold-out arena and cameras beaming the battle across the globe.

He went on: “It’s a place I love, a country I love, and I love fighting in front of the Irish people.

“I’m looking forward to making that walk and being the first Scottish guy to headline a major promotion.”
