FOOTBALL

GRASSROOTS AWARDS

Lanarkshire football clubs can be put forward for this year’s McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards.

The awards, which are run alongside the Scottish FA, celebrate the efforts of grassroots volunteers across Scotland, who go the extra mile in their communities.

McDonald’s is the longest-standing supporter of grassroots football in the UK, having worked with the four UK FAs for 18 years.

In that time they have championed the work of volunteers who invest countless hours to deliver safe, fun football to children and young adults regardless of age, gender or disability.

Scotland hero Kenny Dalglish, a McDonald’s fun football ambassador, said: “For eighteen years, McDonald’s has always been keen to sing the praises of local grassroots heroes who invest so much of their own personal time into the game.

“I really enjoy hearing about the enthusiasm, devotion and passion of volunteers all across Scotland every year. From rising stars to top volunteers, there are eleven categories to nominate someone in. Make sure you nominate your football heroes.”

Nominations can be submitted in categories including best volunteer in youth football, best community club, best para-football project, football mum of the year, and best Community for All project.

Nominations for the 2020 Scottish FA and McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards are now open.

To nominate a grassroots football club or volunteer, go to www.mcdonalds. co.uk/awards. The award nominations for Scotland close on June 10, and winners will be presented with their awards at a ceremony at Hampden Park.

DARTS

AIRDRIE AND DISTRICT DARTS LEAGUE

It was qualifying for some short play events this week in The Airdrie and District Dart League, as the three and four man team events were whittled down to the later stages.

The three man event saw a triple match with a double and a single consisting of double starts to add a bit of variety to the weekly league format.

The first team to reach the final was The Workmen’s C.

Graham Anderson, Derek Cunningham and William Borland provided too strern a task for their opponents on the night.

Outfits from the Workmen’s A and The West End were no match before The Post won the triple, but took no more points.

The Workmen’s B third team did little either to push the star laden trio.

In the final they will face The Workmen’s B trio of Jim McGeary, Scott Gibb and Stevie Carson, who stuttered and stumbled their way to the final.

Matches against the Workmen’s A and a derby against their own second team all went to the decider while The Boar’s Head managed to win the triple and could have won.

Defeat of The Eagle in the semi-final was probably their best performance.

In the four man event it was two doubles and four singles matches with the possibility of a play-off to decide who progressed.

The Workies first squad which saw George Lindsay take care of The Eagle and The Clansman teams to get through.

The Barnyard once again continue to play well and Ricky Grant, Stephen Carr, Jake McKay and Alan McKay will be pleased to be in the last four and could push the Workies B all the way.

In the other semi-final, The Workmen’s C utilised their good trio with Shug Rice beating an Eagle foursome and the Bank Social Club.

Their opponents in the semi will be The Post who had Kenny Campbell, Stuart Ferguson, Lee Pearson and Robert O’Donahue to thank for giving them a target on finals night.
