Work due to start on new £14m station

-

Work will get underway in the coming months on a £14.5 million redevelopment which will turn Motherwell Rail Station into an integrated regional transport hub.

Contractors, Balfour Beatty have been appointed to carry out the work on the project which will transform the station and its surroundings.

ScotRail, North Lanarkshire Council, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), and Transport Scotland have teamed up to create the Motherwell hub, which will act as a gateway to the Glasgow City Region.

Links between bus and train services will be improved by the redevelopment work, and there will be an overhaul of the public realm outside the station building.

Muir Street will benefit from an expansion of the area for buses and there will also be an expansion of the park and ride facilities at Farm Street.

Commuters will also welcome new facilities planned for taxis, car drop-off points and disabled parking.

The enhanced station forecourt and building will be brighter with a glazed roof. There will be a larger concourse and improved ticket retailing facilities.

Toilets and waiting areas will also be refurbished with improved retail units offering food and drink.

Councillor Paul Kelly, Depute Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said:“This project sees a significant investment in Motherwell town centre to create a modern rail station with improved facilities for passengers, linking to a high-quality bus, train and cycle transport interchange.

“It will provide increased access for local people to jobs, education and training opportunities in Lanarkshire and the rest of central Scotland.

“The new facilities will also link to the council’s other Glasgow City Region City Deal projects which will deliver new roads connecting Cumbernauld, Airdrie, Ravenscraig and the M74, bringing new business and jobs to the area, opening up links with the rest of the Scotland and the UK and giving a major boost to the local economy.”

The Motherwell hub project will be delivered in two phases, with work on the station redevelopment due to start by the summer, and the transport integration works following next year.

Kirsty Devlin, ScotRail Head of Projects, said: “Motherwell is ready for a railway station that matches the dynamic development of the town.

“Our close collaboration will deliver the best possible improvements to facilities and integrated transport options at Motherwell Station.

“The improved transport services will transform the relationship between the station and the town centre. It will open up a wealth of possibilities for Motherwell, creating options and better connections for our customers and business.”
