Tributes to tragic Jonny

- ROSS THOMSON

Friends have rallied round the family of a teenager who was killed after being hit by a car in Shotts.

Seventeen-year-old Jonny Dornan was walking along the road when he was struck by car in a two-vehicle crash in Benhar Road in the early hours of March 7.

The tragic teenager, right, was rushed to University Hospital after sustaining serious injuries but died on Saturday, March 28, three weeks after the incident.

Within hours, a Go Fund Me page was set up in memory of Jonny with the aim of raising £2,000 to go towards funeral expenses.

Dawn Leinster, who organised the fundraiser, posted: “I have set this page up on behalf of wee Jonny’s mum Zoe and his lovely family in this difficult time. Jonny was involved in a tragic accident on March 7 and put up an amazing fight for three weeks but sadly his wee body just wasn’t willing to let him fight much longer.

“I am trying to help get as much help to take the strain off the family in this difficult time we are all in just now.

“Jonny’s mum was also a keyworker in all this while dealing with hospitals she was still plodding along to go do her shift like the little trooper she is.”

The target was smashed within 24 hours and to date over £3,000 has been raised.

Dawn added: “This is heartwarming; the generosity is brilliant from all specially in these hard time.

“Thank you from the bottom of all hearts.”

Devastated loved ones paid tribute to ‘wee Jonny’ described as the ‘kindest soul’ and ‘happiest person in the room’ on social media.

Police have issued a fresh appeal for information regarding Jonny’s death.

The crash happened around 2.50am on the B717 Benhar Road and involved a blue Volkswagen Polo and a pedestrian. A second car was known to be in the area but has still to be identified.

Road Policing Sergeant Andy Shearer said: “Our thoughts are very much with the teenager’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing into the collision and it’s important we establish exactly what happened. I continue to appeal to anyone who witnessed the crash or was driving through the area around the time, and has not yet spoken to police, to come forward with any information or dash-cam footage they have.

“We know that there was a second car near the scene and we urge the driver of that vehicle to come forward to provide information that could prove vital to our investigation and would ask them to contact us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information can contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference number 0522 of 7 March.
