Lockdown concerns foryouth

-

School closures due to the coronavirus may lead to children being greater exposed to online dangers.

With all schools being closed due to the outbreak, children in Wishaw and surrounding areas will be spending more time on tablets and phones.

This may be for school work or socialising with friends, but it could lead to an increase in online danger.

Steve Winyard, creator of age restriction tool AgeBlock, believes a renewed focus on protecting children from accessing inappropriate materials through their devices is vital at this time.

He said: “Inevitably we’re going to see a huge spike in children using their devices during this time.

“This increased usage could well end up being largely unsupervised by parents.

“Not only do teachers need confidence that children are accessing learning materials rather than browsing social media, but parents also need reassurance that increased screen time will not lead to increased risk of their child accessing inappropriate content.”

Children being home all the time may also lead to an increased risk of child sexual abuse.

Stop It Now! Scotland are a service that helps support people who are worried about their own sexual thoughts, feelings and behaviour towards children.

They have reported that it is possible children will be at increased risk of sexual abuse as isolation begins.

Anyone who is worried about the behaviour of another person towards a child is encouraged to seek practical advice via www. theupstreamproject.org.uk or to call 0131 556 3535 for advice.
