Terror 4am wake-up as driver smashes into wall

- TARA FITZPATRICK

A startled family were woken in the early hours of Sunday morning by the sound of police sirens and could only watch on as a car crashed through their garden and came to a halt inches from their home.

Wendy Armstrong and husband Shane, both 47, heard the sound of wailing police sirens and a vehicle crashing head-long through the brick wall of their garden in Wishaw.

The couple ran to the living room window where they saw the car hurtling towards them before coming to a halt just inches from the house in Kirk Road.

The shocked family opened their front door to see that a huge police presence, including four cars and a van, had descended on the scene.

Wendy told our sister paper the Daily Record: “We were in the house and woke around 4am to the sound of the police cars.

“There were blue lights and cars outside which were blocking the road.

“We were alarmed by the noise and saw the car run through the garden and land inches from our front window.

“It just came clambering right through.”

Wendy cares full time for her mum Joyce Rowan, 80, who was also in the house at the time.

She says the pensioner has been left confused and frightened by the crash.

”My mum has dementia and sleeps at the back of the house,” said Wendy.

“The noise was so bad that it woke her up, she was shouting out for help. She was very traumatised.

“It’s just been a really, really bad experience.”

The family are now faced with repairing significant damage to their property.

The brick wall surrounding the property has been left in ruins, their front window was partially broken and their garden destroyed.

Wendy estimates the damage will cost thousands of pounds to repair.

”We spoke to the police briefly when it happened but we’re not sure where we go from here,” Wendy admitted.

“Last night I didn’t sleep a wink. Every little noise was making me jump.”

The family have started trying to clear the rumble but are worried things might take longer to repair due to lockdown restrictions.

A man has been arrested in connection with the crash incident and the alleged theft of a motor vehicle from Goldcrest Court in Pather.

A police spokesperson said: “A 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
