Top cop’s tips for our readers
Wishaw’s top cop, Chief Superintendent Alan Waddell, Commander of the force’s Lanarkshire Division, has delivered the following message to Wishaw Press readers relating to the coronavirus lockdown:
I would like to thank the overwhelming number of residents in Wishaw and it surrounding areas for continuing to do the right thing during this acute health emergency.
The social distancing legal requirement to stay at home is the best way to protect the NHS and save lives and that message is going to continue for some time.
Officers from the local problemsolving teams have been engaging with communities and will be carrying out additional high-visibility foot and cycle patrols across Wishaw, Motherwell, Shotts and their surrounding villages.
This will help us to better address your concerns about social distancing and acts of anti-social behaviour and criminality.
We acknowledge that people meeting up in public parks and other more secluded areas has caused some anxiety.
We have been engaging with these people and explaining the government guidance on social distancing.
Only as a last resort, and where people repeatedly continue to defy the very clear advice given by the government, will we take enforcement action and issue fixed penalty notices.
Specially trained officers will be making effective use of the off-road motorbikes provided by the local authority partnership to address specific complaints about the use of offroad bikes in and around the villages.
Local officers are visiting retail and pharmaceutical staff in support of the service they are providing to the community, especially within the town centres and retail parks.
I am aware at times there may be frustration around constraints impacting on your daily routine, however, I would ask you to remain patient during this unprecedented and challenging time.
I would like to acknowledge the positive feedback and messages of support from the community for our officers engaged in enhanced patrols throughout the region.
The level of support has been exceptional and I would ask that this continues as we move forward. Please avoid unnecessary journeys, like visiting and socialising with friends and family who stay outwith your household.
