Praise for football club

Motherwell FC has been congratula­ted on its efforts to support the community during the coronaviru­s pandemic.

The club has announced it will work with community groups to help vulnerable families during the crisis, with fans volunteeri­ng to help distribute food parcels while observing social distancing.

Local councillor­s Kenneth Duffy and Paul Kelly welcomed the news.

Councillor Duffy has been working with Craigneuk Community Council to aid vulnerable people and was delighted to hear that the club had already recruited more than 50 volunteers, including taxi drivers, A&E staff, furloughed workers, unemployed people and members of the Well Bois fan club.

He said:“We all know what an outstandin­g asset Motherwell FC are to our community and yet again they have stepped up to the plate with this generous offer of support.

“I know through my work with local community groups just how valuable and badly needed this work is to help our most vulnerable during this worrying and uncertain time.

Councillor Paul Kelly added:“Keeping the most vulnerable people in our community safe and healthy is more important than ever before.

“Motherwell FC are a club rooted in our community and supporting people when they need help most illustrate­s those principles. I look forward to working with them on this fantastic initiative.”

Dawn Middleton is the general manager of Motherwell FC Community Trust. She said:“The current situation is having a real and immediate impact on people’s lives.

“We want to use our platform and resources to offer support where we can. We are continuing our work locally through this initiative, thanks to the funding we have received, and our supporters have also stepped up to help those in urgent need. Motherwell Football Club is a central part of this community. We are determined to continue our work to help people during these difficult times.”
