Fitba fundraiser is put on hold

-

A huge football fundraiser in Shotts is the latest casualty of the coronavirus crisis.

A team of Rangers legends were due to take on a Shotts select at Hannah Park in June, with all of the proceeds being split by Wishaw-based suicide prevention charity Chris’s House and St Andrew’s Hospice.

However, the game has had to be postponed due to current restrictions.

Event organiser Stuart Thomson said:“It’s particularly disappointing as the two charities, St Andrew’s Hospice and Chris’s House, could, I’m sure, be doing with the money we expected to raise and for our hosts Shotts Bon Accord who are currently receiving no income it’s a body blow.

“We are absolutely committed to making this event happen as soon as it’s safe to do so, it’s just impossible to predict at the moment.

“A lot of work has already gone into the planning, so whenever we can rearrange we will be ready to move quickly. We are particularly sorry for the huge number of mascots who booked all the places for both teams and those who have paid to play but hopefully normality will return soon and new memories can be made.

“We will review in line with government policy.”

Last year’s match raised thousands of pounds in memory of Stuart’s brother Gordon, who died after a short battle with cancer.

Former Ibrox stars such as Alex Rae, Marvin Andrews, Charlie Miller, Colin Hendry, and Nacho Novo laced up the boots, with defender Andrews being taken to hospital following a nasty clash of heads.
