Queues at Wishaw KFC reopening

- ROSS THOMSON

Scores of poultry-lovers queued up to get their chicken fix as KFC’s Wishaw branch opened for the first time during the coronavirus lockdown.

The fast-food giant re-opened drive-thru facilities at 55 of its UK branches as the firm seeks to slowly get operations back to normal.

One of the first restaurants to open doors was in Wishaw – where a mass number of hungry punters took to their cars to queue up.

Pictures from the branch show vehicles lining up en masse as staff get back to their first day of work since the nationwide lockdown was announced.

KFC was among a number of nonessential shops, bars and restaurants ordered to close doors by Boris Johnson on March 23.

In a statement, the firm urged people not to “all rush at once” as news of a mass re-opening of branches emerged on social media.

One local claimed traffic police were deployed to monitor the traffic situation at the Glasgow Road branch.

They said: “KFC Wishaw open with punters parked round the block waiting to be served and traffic cops watching from a distance.”

Another person wrote: “Just drove past KFC in Wishaw there. Do people really miss it that much? It’s bedlam ... wait till the pubs are open.”

A spokesperson for KFC said: “We’ve been working hard to responsibly re-open our restaurants and now we’re spreading our wings a little further.

“In line with government advice, we’ve decided to open the drive-thru lanes at 55 of our UK restaurants that are already open for delivery.

“We know it’s tempting, but please, please don’t all rush at once. Delivery remains the best way to get your fried chicken fix – we just want to offer a little more choice to those who are already on the road for essential journeys.”
