The car’s the star for this year’s hospice draw

- ROSS THOMSON

Could there be another Wishaw winner of a brand new car in St Andrew’s Hospice Grand Car Raffle?

Last year, the competition helped the charity raise £40,000 to provide specialist care and support for patients and their loved ones across Lanarkshire.

As well as the chance of winning a brand new car, there are also cash prizes up for grabs for two lucky runners up – £500 and £250. Last year’s top prize winner, Audrey Allen from Wishaw, became the proud owner of a brand new Dacia.

She couldn’t believe it when a member of the hospice’s fundraising team called to tell her she’d won.

“My husband Stephen got a call on the day the draw was made asking me to phone Bruce back at the hospice,” said Audrey.

“I called back when I finished work and he gave me the good news.”

Audrey realised she was a winner but didn’t believe she would be driving off with the new car.

She said: “I knew third prize was £250 and second prize was £750, and first prize was the car. I just thought ‘oh brilliant, at least I’ve won £250’.

“Then he said you have actually won the car so I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s fantastic’.”

The mum-of-one was delighted with her new wheels as she was used to driving a 15-year-old Ford Focus.

She added: “The car I had was an old 04-plate so I could certainly have been doing with a new car.

“The thing is I don’t drive a lot so I couldn’t justify buying one. So it’s absolutely fantastic getting this car.”

St Andrew’s Hospice, a registered charity, and provides specialist palliative care free of charge for patients in both North and South Lanarkshire.

Tickets are £1 and can be bought in books of 10 from the Hospice’s website: https:// www.st-andrews-hospice.com/ grand-car-raffle/
