Right place at right time for mum Debbie

- MICHAEL PRINGLE

A mum-to-be got a bit of a shock when she realised her baby was on its way when she went for an antenatal check at Wishaw’s maternity unit.

Debbie Dempsey, 34, had contacted the midwives at University Hospital Wishaw as she was worried that she hadn’t felt her expected arrival moving for a while and was told to attend immediately.

But Debbie needn’t have worried because as soon as she arrived at the hospital she realised she didn’t have long to go until her baby daughter Amber arrived.

“I hadn’t felt much movement so I phoned to see what they thought and they said they would check the baby’s heartbeat and stuff,” said Debbie. “But as soon as I stepped into the room that’s when my waters broke so I was in the right place at the right time.

“It was all go from there. I can’t believe it’s all over and she’s here.

“I’m feeling fine now, it is tiring at the beginning but we’re getting into a routine.”

Debbie’s husband Rudy Dempsey, 38, is now enjoying spending time at home in Cambusnethan with his new bundle of joy.

Rudy works with North Lanarkshire Council but is currently off work as a precautionary measure because he has asthma.

The proud dad has nothing but praise for the care hospital staff provided to both mum and baby.

He said: “They were brilliant with us, absolutely superb. We didn’t know Debbie was going into labour.

“She was just going in for them to check the heart rate and they said she would be fine.

“I had been sat out in the car for two hours in the car park when I got a phone call to tell me to come in.

“Debbie was overdue and had a bit of pain but we still didn’t realise she was in labour. We just thought she was going in for a wee test.

“Amber eventually arrived the next morning about 6.30am and for most of the time it was just us and the midwife Rachel, who was really brilliant.

“Other midwives came in to the room near the end as Debbie needed a bit of help – they had to use forceps to help get the baby out.

“Debbie got out the next day and baby Amber is doing great.”
