Plansin placeto remove phones

-

BT is proposing to remove 16 public payphones in North Lanarkshire and is asking Wishaw residents for their views.

Use of payphones has declined by more than 90 per cent in the last decade, and the need to provide payphones for use in emergency situations is reducing all the time with at least 98 per cent of the UK having 3G or 4G coverage.

As long as there is network coverage, it is now possible to call the emergency services even if you don’t have credit or coverage from your own mobile provider.

Consultation notices have been places on the 16 payphones proposed for removal; the deadline for residents to comment is Friday, September 11.

Among the payphones under threat include those Carfin Street, Whittagreen Avenue and Emily Drive in Motherwell; Coltness Road, Yarrow Crescent and Dimsdale Avenue in Wishaw and Main Street, Cleland.
