Cops step up patrols
Youths targeted two people in apparently random violent attacks at a nature reserve in Motherwell.
The sickening assaults were on a man and a woman in separate incidents on the same evening.
Police now want to trace youths who were part of a gang congregated at the Baron’s Haugh nature reserve near the town’s historic Dalzell Estate last Monday night.
It is thought at least one of those attacked was running to keep fit.
Earlier in the week, police confirmed they had put extra patrols in place to order to combat antisocial behaviour at the nature reserve.
A Police Scotland statement said: “Police will be carrying out extensive patrols of Baron’s Haugh Nature Reserve, Motherwell following reports of youths drinking and disorder.”
Motherwell West councillor Meghan Gallacher stated she had been contacted by several constituents about the issues at the nature reserve.
She said:“I have been contacted by a number of constituents regarding antisocial behaviour at Barons Haugh since the beginning of lockdown.
“Last year, my colleague Councillor Nathan Wilson and I held a public meeting at Dalziel High School to discuss this issue and since then, CCTV cameras have been installed in the area.
“It is disappointing that cases of antisocial behaviour appear to be on the rise again.
“I am pleased to hear that Police Scotland have announced extra patrols within the area as it shows they are taking this matter very seriously.
“It should also provide reassurance to many local residents who have raised concerns previously.
“If anyone witnesses anti-social behaviour in the area, please contact Police Scotland on 101.”
