Motherwell AC set for Wishaw track return

- MARK PIRIE

Motherwell Athletics Club are targeting a return to training within the next week.

Vice-chair Jim Smith has revealed that the club will run some local test events with small groups this weekend.

The club also hope to be granted access to the Wishaw Sports Centre track for the first time since the Covid-19 lockdown in the coming days.

“The coaches have been giving the kids different tasks to do during the lockdown,” he said.

“With a bit of luck, we will be able to get back to some proper training this Saturday.

“We will trial for a short time each coach having four kids in groups for a wee session.

“It will just be a trial as we will have to go through the procedures and tests before we run. We will see if it is possible to do this.

“We have also got word that the Wishaw Sports Centre track will open up next week.

“It might not be of use for our young runners because there are no toilets, so we are not sure how that will work.

“We will clarify with North Lanarkshire Leisure before we take anything further, but these are positives that we can work towards now.

“We would be restricted to numbers and they would be kids. Normally we would have up to 70 on a club night and we won’t be allowed that.

“We hopefully will be able to train on Monday, Wednesday and a Saturday morning to squeeze everybody in.”

Despite the positives for the young runners, Smith does not expect Motherwell runners to take part in competitive events until 2021.

He added: “There won’t be any real competitions in Scotland this year, in my opinion.

“Grangemouth are going to hold a couple of open grades.

“Young runners will have priority and there will be no competition, minus a final time.

“There is word that some championships may be held in December and January, but it’s dependent on coronavirus.”
