‘Well Women’s trophy targets on SWF return

- MARK PIRIE

Motherwell Women’s boss Eddie Wolecki Black has silverware in mind as the SWPL1 received the green light to return.

The top tier will return from October 18 as The Steelwomen look to build on success before the Covid-19 shut down.

The gaffer admits it will be tough to compete with the big-spending Old Firm sides but is confident the Fir Park side can bring a trophy to Lanarkshire.

“We were going quite well even though we had only had a couple of games,” said Wolecki Black.

“We were sitting in a good position in the league and we had just won the group stages of the League Cup to get into the quarter finals.

“We were on quite a good run before we stopped. The League Cup carries on and we hope to go for silverware there.

“There will be no Scottish Cup and our current league programme continues, so we start again against Hibs.

“For this group of players I set really high standards.

“I was at Motherwell previously, and this squad is the best group that has ever been at the club.

“They are better than the team that won the lower leagues, and better than the squad that I won the title with and went to the Scottish Cup final.

“I won’t limit what this squad can do. This season the standard will be very high because the Glasgow giants Rangers and Celtic have invested heavily.

“It’s very difficult to compete with that; they are just in a different market from us.”

Wolecki Black admits it has been tough to adjust training around the new normal, but is looking forward to getting back to Dalzeil Park next month.

“It’s been a difficult time for everyone involved,” he added.

“We are probably looking at a sixweek training programme to get ourselves ready before the start of the season.

“We’ve had the girls doing some training over Zoom to keep them ticking over as best we could, but football fitness is football fitness. You don’t get it from a Zoom call.”
