Wishaw’s cup cracker as they face Cumnock

-

Mark Daly hopes Wishaw can repeat their 2016 Scottish Junior Cup scalp over Cumnock after drawing the Ayrshire giants in the South Challenge Cup.

The Wishaw boss will take his side to Townhead Park in round two after they were given a first round bye.

It’s a new venture for the sides, as part of the new-look West of Scotland League setup, and it will be the first meeting between the pair since Wishaw claimed a shock 2-0 win at Beltane Park four years ago in the Junior Cup

Daly said:“We are looking forward to it. It will be a tough tie and they’ll be a decent outfit.

“We found out on Saturday at training and the boys are buzzing. It will be a good trip and a chance to really test ourselves.

”I think the club were worried we’d be travelling to Wigtown or something, so it’s a good tie.

“The last time we played Cumnock we beat them in the

Scottish Junior Cup in the first round, so hopefully we can do something like that again. Tony McInally [the Cumnock bos] will have them well-drilled, he always does. They’re a good side.

“It looks a good competition, there’s a good mix or teams in there and it will be something different for us.”

Wishaw enjoyed their fifth pre-season session on Saturday, as the side build-up to their competitive return in October. The cup tie as well as their opening WOSL fixtures are due to be played then, subject to Covid restrictions

Daly added:“We’ve been back a couple of weeks now and it’s been really good. All the boys’ fitness levels have been really good, obviously they’ve not been indulging too much over lockdown. It’s a wee bit different, taking temperatures, washing hands and cleaning footballs, but it is what it is.”
